Research Hypotheses

What is a Research Hypothesis?

Many times in your research courses, you will be asked to write a hypothesis statement. These are different from standard thesis statements in that they introduce a specific prediction to be supported by the research you will conduct, and they propose an expected or predicted relationship between two or more variables. Below is an example of a research question and its corresponding hypothesis.

Example:

Research question:
How do self-paced, asynchronous courses affect the academic success of adult learners?

Hypothesis:
Adult learners will do better academically in asynchronous courses than they would in courses with required face time and other time constraints.
